The advocacy actions that we have selected are:

  • Convene a Bible study with a focus on examples of advocacy
  • Keep advocacy visible within our congregation by including it in our monthly newsletter
  • Hold an offering of letters to federal, state, and local officials
  • Host or join with other local congregations in hosting public officials in a community forum
  • Reach out to other congregations in our community to involve them in advocacy
  • Collect a special offering for the Lutheran Public Policy Office

We are planning to designate two Sundays in July (7/5 and 7/11) to Christian Citizenship, including an offering of letters on the 11th (perhaps around tax credits for low income workers, which is a Bread for the World suggestion).

Salem is a member of Spokane Alliance, and several its members are active in the Faith and Environment Network. We have helped with advocacy efforts through both of those organizations.  Salem also hosts the local chapter of VOICES, an advocacy group for women and people of low income.  We have also helped sponsor events such as the annual legislative update.
