December 17, 2007

Greetings King County Advocates!

We here at LPPO hope you are enjoying an Advent season full of family and friends.  A reminder, registration for Faith Advocacy Day 2008 is now open!  You can register online here.

As your church begins to schedule its calender for the late winter and spring, remember that the LPPO staff is always available  to preach and/or teach on advocacy issues.  Contact the office for more information.

Please be aware of the following issues and events in King County...

Holy Cross Lutheran Hosts Celebration of Holy Innocents Day

The Church of the Fourth Century declared the Feast of the Holy Innocents to commemorate the suffering of the children put to death by order of King Herod following the birth of Jesus. On Friday, December 28th, between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, you are invited to join us in commemorating the hundreds of thousands of children and other non-combatants who have died over the past four years in Iraq.

Sponsored by the Church Council of Greater Seattle, the Lutheran Public Policy Office of Washington, Pax Christi Pacific NW, the Rauschenbusch Center, and KairosAction and hosted by the congregation of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, this commemoration will offer a time of prayer followed by a silent public witness concluding with coffee and conversation.

Holy Cross Lutheran is located at 4315 129th Place SE in Bellevue just off of SE Newport Way. Click here for a map.  For more information, contact David at LPPO.

Rally to Support the Rights of the Homeless

Real Change, the newspaper and advocacy organization working to end homelessness and poverty, is sponsoring a rally and overnight tent city this Wednesday, December 19th, to protest recent mistreatment of the homeless with the City of Seattle.  As the ELCA Social Statement of Economic Life reminds us, "It is not poor people themselves who are the problem, but their lack of access to the basic necessities of life...Poverty is a problem of the whole human community, not only those who are poor or vulnerable."  See the invitation from Real Change below, and come out on Wednesday to stand in solidarity and support for the rights of the homeless in Seattle.

Survival is a right

Between 1,600 and 2,000 people in Seattle have nowhere to sleep tonight and shelters are full. Those who find refuge in tents in parks and greenbelts have been systematically and brutally removed from those campsites. Their personal possessions and their survival gear have been confiscated or destroyed.

Join the Real Change Organizing Project next Wednesday, December 19th for a rally and overnight tent city at City Hall.
Rally: 5:00 to 6:00 PM at City Hall (600-4th Ave. @ James Street)
Overnight Tent City: 6:00 pm Wednesday to noon Thursday--meet at Real Change @3:30 for preparation.

We call upon the city to cease campsite clearances and provide long-term shelter. Join us for the rally, join us for the overnight, download the flyer and circulate it broadly. All people deserve the right to survive. We can't let the city forget it.

If you're able to camp overnight contact Natalie / 206-441-3247. For more information contact Rachael / 206-441-3247 ext 201.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration

On Monday, January 21st the Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee will sponsor, for the 26th consecutive year (the most of any US city), the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Rally and March at Franklin High School (3013 South Mount Maker Blvd  Seattle - 98144, Map).  The free celebration will begin with registration at 9am followed by a wide variety of workshops beginning at 9:30am.  The rally with music and speakers will begin at 11:00am and clergy are welcome to come and be recognized.  The march will begin at noon.  LPPO is a part of the planning committee and encourages all area ELCA churches to come and march with us — bring you banner!  The ELCA social statement “The Church in Society” states that as part of our baptismal vocation our church commits to “join with others to remove obstacles of discrimination and indifference that prevent people from living out their callings.”  We encourage you to come and participate to be part of the Church’s public witness against injustice.

For more information on participating and how to get involved contact the LPPO office or visit the MLK Celebration Committee website.

One Step Further: An Evening of Faithful Legislative Advocacy

A forum to mobilize individuals and the faith community to take legislative action to address hunger, poverty and children’s issues in South King County.

Thursday, January 24, 2008 - Kent Lutheran Church - 7:00 – 9:00pm

Lutheran Public Policy Office in conjunction with several faith organizations is sponsoring this forum, hosted by Kent Lutheran Church and faith leaders from South King County, to give members of the faith community an opportunity to take action on five current pieces of legislation affecting hunger, poverty or children’s issues. State legislators along with advocates from the faith community are being invited to briefly discuss the issues and answer questions.  Time will then be used to call, email and write letters to state legislators supporting this legislation. Please join us in taking “One Step Further” in this call to faith in action, and invite others to come too. No registration is required. All are welcome.
