Advocating Congregations
What is Advocating Congregations?
Advocating Congregations is LPPO’s ministry to partner with congregations who want to make advocacy a ministry of priority in the life of their congregation. The decision to be an Advocating Congregation is intended to as a way for congregations to realize their role as people of faith not only in the public sphere, but also as proponents of justice and peace in our churches.
The Advocating Congregations Covenant is an invitation for you to enter into a process of discernment about what it means and what it looks like to be advocates in your congregation and community. It is also a covenant of partnership with LPPO; the designated office for the ministry of advocacy in Washington State.
Why become an Advocating Congregation?
To advocate is to plead the cause of those suffering injustice. Advocacy ministry is rooted in our baptismal calling to strive for peace and justice in all the earth (Affirmation of Baptism, ELW). It is part of our vocation as a church body and as individuals, to advocate for and with our neighbors in need. To this end we use our voices collectively in places where important political and economic decisions are being made. Becoming and Advocating Congregation means adding your voice to the public cry for justice.
