Advocacy in the ELCA

ELCAemblem
There are four levels to the advocacy ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

State Public Policy Offices
The Lutheran Public Policy Office of Washington State is one of the 20 state public policy offices of the ELCA. These ministries represent the church in advocating at the state and local level with and on behalf of those without economic or political power. They work in partnership with local congregations, synods and social ministry organizations. Click here for a list of the state public policy offices.

ELCA Washington D.C. Office
The ELCA Washington Office fulfills the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's witness for social justice on domestic and foreign policy issues facing the nation, and through it, the world. With a commitment to a prophetic vision which stands with the poor and the powerless, the office represents the church's positions within the complex arena of public debate. To achieve effective interaction between the whole church and the federal government, the office educates, informs and enables full involvement of the church in this ministry.

Corporate Responsibility Program
The Corporate Social Responsibility program operates on the belief that God's business involves all of life and that God calls the Church both corporately and individually to use all that is committed to its care to practice good stewardship of the creation (Genesis 1:26), pursue justice (Amos 5:24), care for people in need (Matthew 25:40), and seek things that make for peace (Luke 19:41-42). The Corporate Social Responsibility program seeks to dialogue with business representatives on the social implications of company practices and to affect ELCA investment policy in socially responsible ways.

Lutheran Office for World Community
The Lutheran Office for World Community represents the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York under a written agreement between the ELCA Church in Society program unit and the LWF. The LWF is a non-governmental organization officially recognized by the UN's Economic and Social Council.
